Champs! LA Girls’ Basketball Takes Groton School/Lawrence Academy Holiday Tourney

By Jonathan Gotlib

On Saturday, December 21, LA varsity girls’ basketball competed in the final round of the annual Groton School/Lawrence Academy Girls’ Basketball Holiday Tournament.

Their opponent? Of course, it was cross-town rival, Groton School; the same ISL arch-nemesis that bested LA in the 2019 NEPSAC Final.

The tournament, which started Friday afternoon, Dec. 19, hosted teams from Phillips Exeter Academy, Taft School, Phillips Andover Academy, and Winsor School. Games were played at both the Groton School and LA gyms.

However, Groton hosted the championship game — a close match up from tip-off to the final buzzer — which had everyone on-edge. With each tick of the clock, both sides remained unsure about who would come out on top.

But in the end, Coach Mastrangelo and her girls were victorious over the Zebras, with a final score of 44-35.

There was a clear, high level of excitement by and for the team and coaches during their celebration at center court at Groton School. And, after the trophy ceremony, Spartan senior Ashley Evans was named Tournament MVP.

Fun fact: This makes back-to-back tournament victories for the varsity girls’ basketball team. Both wins against Groton School. Only difference, the 2018-19 win was at home in the Stone Athletic Center.
